COCCULUS INDICUS

Cocculus indicus has great function over the nervous system. It most frequently used for vertigo and car sickness, person who suffer from nausea and vomiting when wagon riding. In ancient time the half-ripe fruit of this plant was used to stupefying fish for easily catch them. Actually, picrotoxin is the active poisonous principle act as stupefying agent.


Cocculus is indicated:

·        The person who are book lover. Continuous reading books. Wants nerve power due to over study or hard working.

·        Sleeplessness or absence of sleep at night with anxiety. Nightmare.

·        Vertigo while sitting on bed, always accompanied by nausea and dullness in forehead.

·        Feels hungry but loss of appetite. Disgust for food (Colchicum), smell of food become offensive to him.

·        Feels thirsty but aversion to drinking.

·        Stool generally, constipated, small frequent stool passes with flatus. Tenesmus after stool.  

·        Great nausea provoked by eating, drinking, from cold, by motion especially when riding on bus, car or others. Nausea associated with dull headache and pain in intestine. The taste become bitter or metallic.

·        Paralysis of voluntary muscles. Good remedy for hemiplegia. Feeling numbness, lassitude & twitching of isolated group of muscles.

·        Weakness with dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation). Indicated for the female who are sentimental, mysterious, loving to read adventurous & imaginative story. With painful menses, they are suffering from hysteria, headache etc.

·        Cocculus is come after Nux-vomica for the treatment of umbilical hernia.

Particular symptoms:

*** Vertigo & headache: Vertigo while sitting associated with nausea and dull headache in forehead. Feels better in recumbent position (similar to Bryonia). During this condition memory become weak, dull in comprehension & aggravated by mental effort. Headache chiefly feeling in forehead and temple. Pain may pass over the right eye feels eyes were torn with obscured vision. Pain may characterize as dull, constricting & compressed.

*** Stomach & abdomen: Chiefly indicated for dyspepsia. From upper abdomen constricting, pinching, pressing pain may goes upwards after eating, drinking and provoked nausea and vomiting. Loss of appetite & thirst although feels hungry & thirsty. In case of intestinal colic feels pressure, sticking & cutting pain around the navel. Stool becomes constipated. Disposition to stool, but wants of peristaltic motion in upper intestine.

*** Respiratory organ: Dyspnea from constriction in larynx. Sneezing, coryza. The cough is increased by indulging the disposition of cough (Ignatia). Feeling of emptiness in chest, abdomen, stomach.

*** Mental condition: Patient become mild, despondent in the face of difficulties, excessive anxiety from trivial matter, fearful, disgust from noise.

*** Paralysis: Cocculus is a well remedy for paralysis of limb muscle. Paralysis of hand while writing. Feels muscles are sore, weak, weight feeling and trembling.

*** Modalities: Symptoms are aggravated from eating, drinking, riding, talking, from cold, motion.

*** Relation: Antidoted by: Camphor, Chamomilla.

It antidotes: Nux-vom, Coffea, Cuprum met.

Compare: Ignatia, Nux-vom.
