SECALE CORNUTUM (Ergot of Rye)


It is a Homoeopathic nosodes remedy obtain from the fungus. It is poisonous and used as abortifacient in ancient period. After proving it used as good female remedy in Homoeopathy. The action of Secale is seen over the arterioles. On arterioles it causes persistent constriction, diminished arteriolar diameter thereby leading to stasis of circulation. On later it greatly relaxed arterioles and causes excessive bleeding per nose, mouth, urethra, anus, uterus and causes serious life-threatening conditions. Thereby its potentized form of Homoeopathic preparations are effective for the treatment of haemorrhage.


          The key symptoms of Secale are burning and heat. Every kind of condition this symptom must be present. Patient feel internal heat but external parts examines to cold, although they cannot bear to cover them due to excessive sense of burning (this condition also present in Arsenic patient but patient feels better by application of heat in spite of burning). Secale patients are look thin, feeble, cachectic and scrawny. Pale and sunken face having blue wrinkles around the eyes. Muscles are loos with loss of tonicity. The haemorrhage of Secale become dark in color (venous origin), thin, watery, copious and continuously oozing out from the part with a tendency to putrescence the part.

 

*** Female disorder:

Secale is useful for the treatment of excessive uterine bleeding from any origin when bleeding characteristic is present. It is useful to treated threatened abortion in first trimester (within twelve weeks) of pregnancy. Secale increase uterine contractility and smooth delivery. It progresses labor when it is inefficient. The labor pain become irregular, everything seems loose and open, women cannot create force to delivered the baby; patient may go into faint due to weakness. It also useful to expulsion of retained placenta or expel placenta when remain inside the uterus due to reduce uterine contractility. The major cause of post-partum haemorrhage is atonic uterus. Secale constricts the uterine arterioles and reduced uterine bleeding when uterine atonicity is developed.

          It is useful to treating menorrhagia. Menstrual blood become dark in color, thin, watery, copious and oozing from the part. Bleeding may continue until the next period. Labor like menstrual colic. Coldness of feet with intolerance of heat in feeble, scrawny patient.

In case of insufficient production of milk in thin, scrawny women after confinement Secale increase milk production.

*** Gangrene:

Secale useful for the treatment of dry gangrene, diabetic foot gangrene. Any sore and ulcer when not to heal properly and may turn into gangrene also treated by Secale. The gangrenous area of Secale is blackish or bluish in color with formation of large blister. The area become burns as like as fire is passing. On examination area feels cold but pain is reduced by applying cold. Patient look pale and skin become hangs in folds as if very loose. Arsenicum album also comes in this case.

*** Gastro-intestinal symptoms:

Secale patient are glutton and thirsty. They have unnatural ravenous appetite. Patient eats a lot although he suffered from loose of flesh. Usually, patients are desire to eat sour and acid foods and drinks. Patient also have unquenchable thirst with desire to drink large quantity of cold water (this symptom is also present in Bryonia).

          In gastric ulcer, patient has burning sensation in abdomen with abdominal flatulency. Patient feels better by drinking cold water. Cannot digest foods. Stools become profuse, painless, involuntary, passing with great force and he got debilitated.

          Cholera:

Secale cures Asiatic cholera. Cholera may occur in summer. During cholera collapsed conditions are developed. Pulse become rapid and thready. Hands and feet are feels cold, but cannot bear covering (Camphor). Spasm or crams with clenched of hands and fingers of toes then spread apart and bends backwards.

Stool become watery, brownish, involuntary passing, profuse, discharged with great force with anus remain widely open (Phosphorus). Patient become very much exhausted, cannot bear touch, Hippocratic look and desire to drink large quantity of cold water.

*** Urinary symptoms:

Secale used to treated enuresis of old people. Urine become dark looking. This symptom also found in another Homoeopathic remedy Terebinthina. Urine of Terebinthina is dark due to presence of albumin but the urine of Secale is dark due to presence of blood.

*** Insanity: In insanity Secale patients are delirious and violent. Wants to bite people.

*** Modalities:

Generally, Secale symptoms are aggravated from covering, from heat, warm food and drinks, from warm application, from touch. Symptoms are relieved by cold application, in open air, exposing the affected part.

*** Precaution: This medicine is extremely prohibited to taking in pregnancy as it causes abortion.

*** Duration of action: 20-30 days (according to Dr. Clarke).

*** Remedies that follows well: Arsenicum album, China, Medorrhinum, Pulsatilla.

*** Antidotes: By Camphor, Opium.
